What is a C-wire?
Wire C, also known as the common wire, is the wire that connects the smart thermostat to the HVAC control panel for continuous 24V power. The wire ensures that the thermostat never loses power or Wi-Fi connection. This combination allows you to set the temperature using smart devices no matter where you are and create temperature schedules that suit your lifestyle.

What color is wire C on the thermostat?
The C wire on the thermostat can be any color, but is often blue or black. Most often, the wire on terminal C of the thermostat is the same color as the wire on terminal C of the HVAC control panel (located on the air conditioner or furnace). Most HVAC thermostats use four or more wires connected to the R, G, Y, W, and C terminals.
Why you need a C wire

A C-wire is essential for smart thermostats to ensure uninterrupted power, touchscreen support, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Consider the opposite scenario, where the thermostat is powered by something that does not provide continuous power, such as batteries. If you were to use two AA batteries to power the system's Wi-Fi connection and the touchscreen, the batteries would probably only last a few days.
Even if your smart thermostat says it doesn't need a C-wire, it's much more efficient and cost-effective to have one. The C-cable also eliminates the need to change batteries, which can be expensive if you have to keep changing them. Also, if your thermostat loses power due to a battery failure, you won't be able to turn on your heating and cooling system, making for miserable summer afternoons. With C-Wire, you can set up a smart thermostat and essentially forget about it.
How to find your C string
Turn off power to the HVAC system using the HVAC circuit breaker or circuit breaker. Remove the front panel of the current thermostat and look for the end of the wire marked "C". If there is no wire at terminal C, check for a loose wire marked "C" somewhere on the device. If you don't see a wire on port C or a wire labeled "C", you may need to install a C wire.
If you'd rather not mess with the wiring at all, have an electrician check the C wire and add it safely.
What to do if you don't have a C wire

If you don't have a C cable, you can choose several routes. We do not recommend adding it yourself as working with wires can be potentially dangerous for an untrained DIYer. However, if you have some electrical knowledge, there are several safe ways to add a C wire to your thermostat. Here are the best C-wire installation options.
Make sure wire C is hidden
If you're lucky, you might have a C-wire hidden in the wall. The thermostat wiring harness can be hidden out of sight by simply removing the thermostat faceplate.
Turn off power to the HVAC system and wear a pair of rubber electrical gloves to be safe. Remove the front panel of the thermostat and unscrew the back panel from the wall. Gently pull the back panel and wires out of the wall.
Look for the wire sleeve, which is a plastic tube that collects all the wires in a bundle. If the extra wire is glued or wrapped on the cover, you can use it as wire C. Reattach the back panel to the wall.
If you have experience working with electrical components, you can follow the next few steps. Otherwise, contact a local expert to help you. Connect the cable to terminal C and replace the front panel. Go to your furnace and open the control panel. Look for terminals G, R, Y, W and C which are usually located along the side of the board. Connect wire C to terminal C. Close the panel and turn the HVAC system back on.
Use C-wire/24V transformer adapter
If you don't have a C wire, you can purchase a C wire adapter, also known as a 24V transformer. This adapter takes your existing thermostat wires and allows you to use one of them as a C wire. It comes with a box of new wires that a professional can install on your HVAC control panel. Connect the two wires to a regular outlet near the HVAC system.
A C-wire adapter kit may come with the smart thermostat, but it can also be purchased online or at a home improvement store. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and be sure to turn off the HVAC system before starting the project. As always, if you're new to electricity, leave it to the pros.
Install a new C-wire
